JARVENPAA (31.01.2007)

  • Keep the city clean!

The city of Järvenpää has started a campaign against rubbishing. The year 2007 is a theme year for the campaign "Keep the City of Järvenpää clean". Project started in the New Year's Day morning by cleaning the city from rubbish caused by the celebration of the New Year's Eve.

In our legislation there are a few laws, which deal with the cleaning of the city. For example the laws of order and waste management give the citizens instructions how to behave and what kind of cleaning obligations they have. City of Järvenpää has the rules but now everyone should also toe the line.

The campaign is divided to three sections as educational, informational and functional sectors. Educational sector is concentrating on prevention of rubbishing. Schools, other educational institutions and youth organisations are in the key position. Also the producers of rubbish, like fast food places, are taking part in discussion of the means to reduce the rubbishing of the city. Police is participating in campaign by supervising the existing rules and laws.

Informational sector involves frank publicity by articles in newspapers, advertisements, by straight communication with partners and by Internet-pages. In functional sector citizens will put the city in order. Block organizations, residential associations and hobby and sport organizations will help the citizens in cleaning up the streets and yards.

After the snowy winter time spring will start an active voluntary work for cleaning the city and every citizen should take part in making the city more comfortable and safe place to live. This campaign is a good start for cleaner city, which hopefully will end up with new clean culture of the citizens. So let's keep the city clean!

  • The Nordern Yard - a piece of a living 17th Century

The Northern Yard will be opened in the spring of the year 2007.

Northern Yard is Narva museum's interpretation of 17th century handicraftsmen's part of town. Once walked into the Yard, one finds himself in the middle of history, as he sees people, wearing clothes of that period and rooms, furnished exactly as in the 17th century. Handicraftsmen use 17th century tools and make old things, using objects of that time.
- There are handicraftsmen's shops: blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, tailors shop, potter shop.
- Supervised by a master, a visitor can try some traditional craftsmanships or acquire numerous products, made by the masters themselves.
- Children can play 300-years old games, try on the costumes of Peter I and Karl XII, ride a horse or stay on a watch.
- The participants of children's summer historic camps make a journey back into history, getting acquainted with 17th century life and art of craftsmanships, everyday life and festivals.
- Every August there will be days of history, featuring 17th century fair, handicraftsmen's workshops, reconstruction of the battle of The Northern War and a military camp.

Developing the Northern Yard
Just as there is not a single completely built town, so will be The Northern Yard. Narva Museum's Experimental Centre of History will constantly prepare expositions. The Centre is being established as a Museum unit, which will deal with research and popularisation of the Swedish Period.
- The Centre will organize research camps for scientists, specialists and any other people (including children).
- Both processes - research and popularisation - will be combined and exhibited together.
- The experimental process itself will be exhibited together with the results of research and the new exhibits, created during the activity.

JÄRVENPÄÄ (22.01.2007)

  • The 40th Anniversary of the City of Järvenpää

The City of Järvenpää got her city rights in 1967. That calls for celebration in 2007.

First of the celebration events are, the 75th Anniversary of City Library and the 60th Anniversary of Adult Education Centre/Järvenpään työväenopisto and the Concert of Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in January.

Järvenpää Art Museum opens for February-May an exhibition named "Write to me!". During the Europe Day, on the 9th of May, a reading event "European Literary Marathon" will be organized at the same time with partners all over Europe.

All annual events - Järvenpää Day in May, Kallio-Kuninkala Music Festival in June, and Chamber Music by Lake Tuusula will remember the 40th anniversary in their programmes, and European largest blues-event, Puistoblues - Lakeside Blues Festival has the 30th anniversary this year.

A brand new musical event - Sibelius International Singing Competition - will be held on October 24-27. It is a wonderful opportunity for talents from UBC-cities.

In December, the 90th Independence Day of Finland will be celebrated all over the country.

During this anniversary year all entrances to artists' home museums Ahola and Villa Kokkonen, and to Art Museum are free.

Another parallel theme of this year is "Keep your homtown Järvenpää clean and tidy"-campaign launched by the decision of the City Council. Untidy city environment gives neglectful impression to all visitors. The campaign aims at alteration of attitudes and invites every citizen to pay more attention to common city environment.

AARHUS (17.01.2007)

  • All stops will be pulled in Aarhus in 2007

From 5th to 8th July the Port of Aarhus will be the starting venue for the world's biggest sailing ships race. More than 100 training ships are expected to arrive and will be berthed alongside the quays in the inner harbour, and there will be a corner dedicated to Viking ships not far from the river mouth, where, more than 1200 years ago, the Vikings founded the town. However, all the harbour areas will be bubbling with activity - with everything from great concerts, theatre and cosy café life to sports activities, entertainment for children, and dancing.

  • A year devoted to music in Aarhus

Every year there is lots of music in Aarhus, but 2007 will be a year particularly devoted to music in Aarhus. Concert Hall Aarhus will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in August, and on this occasion it will also inaugurate a large new wing which will house the The Danish National Opera, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and the children's theatre 'Filuren'. Both events will obviously be duly celebrated - so you can be certain to find a rich profusion of music of numerous genres.

Aarhus is the city of music festivals. For 2007 so far the stage is set for seven music festivals; some of which are well established and tradition-rich while others are taking place for the very first time.

Thus, in mid-May Aarhus will provide the setting for two - vastly different - festivals. The SPOR Festival is avant-garde electronic music and sound art. At the same time, a rather different event - the Pulse Festival - will take place for the first time. This will be a genuine Aarhus festival with music originating from the local music community, featuring 120 artists on stages, squares and open spaces throughout the city.

From 31st May to 2nd June it is time for the SPOT 13 Festival which will take place over eight stages in and around the Concert Hall. The festival is considered the most significant display-window for Scandinavian rock music and the programme will feature some 100 Danish and Scandinavian up-and-coming bands and artists with international aspirations.

In July the 19th edition of the Aarhus International Jazz Festival will raise the curtain on a varied offering of jazz bands big and small and orchestras playing all genres of jazz. Over the period of almost a week there will be nearly 200 concerts taking place at just about all the city's music venues, cafés and theatres - in addition to a long list of admission-free concerts in Aarhus' squares and open spaces and the festival's own stage in the Klostertorv square. Within the Jazz Festival hides a small bonus festival which, under the headline "Electronic Jazzjuice 07" at Musikcafeen in Mejlgade, will clad jazz into the finest attire electronic music can offer.

In October Scandinavia's largest hip hop festival will take place for the eighth time at the Train music venue in Aarhus. The festival is called "Aarhus Took It 2007", and it features top international artists, new exciting Danish names, and workshops.

A completely different genre is the International Organ Festival which takes place in November for the fifth time. The Festival this year also features a rich banquet of concerts taking place at Aarhus Cathedral, which houses Denmark's largest organ, at The Church of Our Lady, at Sct. Paul's Church, and at the Concert Hall Aarhus.
