In 2001, the UBC EnvCom Secretariat was service-contracted by European Commission DG Environment to translate and disseminate the "Towards Local Sustainability Profile", European Common Indicators for urban sustainable development. The Technical Report and Methodology sheets of these indicators were translated, printed and disseminated in twelve Central and Eastern European languages. The work was carried out in co-operation with the Regional Environmental Centre (REC) and Environmental Centre for Administration & Technology (ECAT) offices in the above mentioned countries. Since autumn 2001, the reports have been available in Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Bulgarian, Romanian, Croatian, Slovakian and Slovenian. What are the Indicators Monitoring of sustainable development trends in cities requires guidelines, such as the common indicators, which will help to evaluate movement towards or away from sustainability. Integrated indicators reflect the interactions between environmental, economic and social aspects. The European Common Indicators put emphasis on change over time and identification of trends and directions. The European Common indicators are also planned to be complementary to all existing indicators, defined both locally and nationally. These new indicators will not replace any active work in this field done by other actors - on the contrary they will complete the process towards sustainability. In addition to this, the initiative is not just an one-off-project but it has been planned to be a long-term process that will develop during implementation.
