Swinoujscie

Swinoujscie is a popular health resort, situated on the German border and on the Baltic Sea. The city has a population of 45 000 and is built on three islands: Uznam, Wolin and Karsibor. Swinoujscie became a city in 1765, but its beginning dates to the 9th & 10th centuries. The city was ruled by Sweden from 1637 to 1720 when the Stockholm Treaty ceded that area to Prussia. Port construction, started in 1720, was a decisive factor in the city's growth. After World War II the city became a part of the Republic of Poland. Major industries include a ship repair yardm fishing and fish processing and transportation of passengers, trucks and cargo to Sweden and Denmark.

Tourists and vacationers are attracted by the micro climate and the vast, sandy beaches. There are numerous parks throughout the city and visitors can enjoy yachting, surfing, tennis and swimming in the in-door pool or in the sea, fishing or hiking in the parks or the National Forest that adjoins the city. Swinoujscie has a 18th century church and a 19th century lighthouse and a fort.

There is a Museum of Sea Fishing and numerous cultural events throughout the summer. These include the Artistic Festival of Students (July), a regatta and the Sea Festival (June) and the All-Poland Rewiew of Maritime Songs "Wiatrak" in September. There is a pedestrian border crossing to Germany and daily ferries to Sweden and Denmark.
