Working Meeting in Tallinn

The second working meeting of the Commission on Environment was held in Tallinn 18 - 19 April. A total of 14 member cities participated in this two-day event. A big thank you to all the active participants!

MEA Project

The first day of the meeting was devoted to UBC´s Municipal Environmental Auditing project. The presentations focused on how to conduct a MEA project, what kind of experiences the pilot project in Tallinn provided and what the overall situation concerning environmental auditing in Estonia is.

Local Agenda 21 and Treatment of Contaminated Soils

During the second day the current situation of the Baltic Sea Agenda 21 and the results of UBC´s member city survey on Local Agenda 21 were presented. Six cities held a presentation on the topic "Contaminated Soils - Problems in Baltic Cities". As this seems to be an acute and significant problem in many cities, the Commission on Environment has started to plan a seminar concentrating on this issue. The participants expressed their interest towards the idea. The seminar could take place in late autumn of this year or early spring 1998. The need to organize Local Agenda 21 training sessions as well as the need to improve this bulletin were also discussed with vigor.
