Raising Public Awareness and Environmental Education in Kaliningrad

ECAT-Kaliningrad (Environmental Centre for Administration and Technology) has been very active in raising the environmental awareness of the citizens in Kaliningrad and in improving environmental education at schools. A number of activities have been organized to promote these. ECAT-Kaliningrad would welcome any cooperation with other cities or educational organisations in order to enhance these activities.

The following is a brief overview of the numerous activities carried out by ECAT-Kaliningrad in the field of Environmental Education and Public Awareness in the Kaliningard Region.

A childrenīs drawing competition and exhibition were organized in cooperation with with schools and kindergartens, under the slogan "Technical development of the Society and Environment".

A report on "The Environmental Situation of the City of Kaliningrad" collected existing data on the environmental situation in the city of Kaliningrad. It was distributed to local and Western partners.

A survey, "The Health of Our City" was conducted between April and August 1996. These results were also published as a booklet and distributed among local and western partners.

A "Public Awareness and Environmental Education Programme for Kaliningrad" was elaborated by ECAT-Kaliningrad in December 1996 in order to reach a comprehensive overview of PA and EE actions that could and should be developed in Kaliningrad during a period of 1 - 2 years. It also serves as a basis for future project proposals.

The First Environmental Video Week for schools in Kaliningrad was supported by ECAT-St. Petersburg and held in cooperation with the Department for Education of the City Hall. It had the following aims:
- to give Kaliningrad pupils and teachers an overview of new environmental films;
- to evaluate the interest of teachers and children in environmental films as a means for environmental education;
- to assess the necessity for continuing activities aiming the establishment of a video library for schools such as in ECAT- St. Petersburg

Seminar on "Environmental Education at Schools" was organised in March 1997 for the teachers of Kaliningrad and Kaliningrad Region in cooperation with the Institute for Upgrading and Training Teachers in Kaliningrad. The main aim of this seminar was to exchange opinions and experiences and to elaborate a plan of future work.

First exhibition of childrenīs paintings and photographs about the Curonian Spit was the first one of several actions regarding public awareness and environmental education in connection with the project, "Development of Ecotourism and Nature Protection in the Kaliningrad Region"

Coming activities - first international ecological summercamp, July 1997
- training courses on environmental education for teachers
- informative meetings for inhabitants
