"BALTICUM PROJECT"

Cooperation between the Cities of Panevezys and Kalmar

The BALTICUM PROJECT, which deals with environmental issues, was initiated at the beginning of 1995. It is financed by the Swedish Ministry of Environmental Protection and involves the cities of Panevezys in Lithuania and Kalmar in Sweden. The main goal of the project is an exchange of experience between specialists.

The main parts of this project are: collection and utilization of all sorts of waste,water and sludge treatment, ecological education and cleaner means of transportation. For this reason, Panevezys water treatment plant and bus company are also involved in the project.

The water supply company of Panevezys has been in close cooperation with its counterpart in Kalmar. They have signed an agreement in the amount of SEK 300, 000 for investment in waste water treatment equipment. Furthermore, they expect to receive SEK 1 million from the Swedish Ministry of Environmental Protection for the reconstruction of water treatment equipment. Panevezys Bus Company is involved in the BALTICUM PROJECT in order to reduce the air pollution caused by traffic.

Another three ecological projects are foreseen this year between Kalmar and Panevezys. These should be financed by the City and County of Kalmar as well as the Swedish Ministry of Environmental Protection. These projects deal with absorbtion of oil waste from the surface of the river Nevezis, the utilization of used car tyres and the establishment of a site for hazardous waste collection.
