Riga solid waste management project

This project consists of the remediation of the existing disposal site of Getlini as well as establishment of energy cells for enforced degradiation of biodegradable waste. The city also intends to arrange the collection of landfill gas (i.e., methane) and distribution to a boiler house in order to replace fossil fuels.

At present, the city is considering starting a feasibility study of the remediation and continued operation of the Getlini landfill site. This study would include geo-hydrological investigations and a technical design for modern waste management, which would also enable the recovery of landfill gas.

The project is to be financed by SIDA, the City of Riga and the World Bank, supported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development in Latvia.
