On the 13th of May the Turku Local Agenda 21 team organized a car-free day in cooperation with other NGO´s and city authorities. The aim of the event was to encourage people to leave their cars at home and to take a bus, walk or ride a bike instead. In addition, the event attempted to direct the citizens´ attention to air quality in the centre of the city. The main action took place at the Market Square, where the police labelled bicycles against theft, people were able to measure the CO contents of their lungs, school children distributed flowers to bus-drivers and bike riders had a small demonstration. People were very interested in the activities but according to the organizers, unfortunately traffic was not reduced during the day. On the whole, however, the experience was encouraging and it will be organized again next year - hopefully with more success.
