He assumed his position at the beginning of April 1997. The programme comprises nine countries bordering the Baltic Sea as well as five countries that belong to the drainage area. The programme coordinates activities in cooperation with national WWF offices in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The other offices in the programme area are in Riga and St. Petersburg. The overall aim of the programme is to promote environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources in the Baltic Sea Region with special emphasis on biodiversity conservation. The programme has three main elements: marine environment, fresh waters and forests. Furthermore there are cross-sectional topics such as education and training, awareness raising, environmental policy and legislation that engage all these elements. The programme is financed by national WWFs from Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany as well as through the regional WWF Baltic Fund and international WWF funding. Public sources of finance, e.g., bilateral donors like FINNIDA, SIDA and DANIDA as well as the EU PHARE and TACIS programmes and international financing institutions (EBRD and the World Bank) are also potential partners. It is worth mentioning that a private person has donated a considerable amount of money to the project and has promised to contribute to the programme in the years to come as well.
