20 municipalities cooperating

Joint Local Agenda in Southwestern Finland

The City of Turku has, in cooperation with neighbouring municipalities prepared a project proposal for a Local Agenda 21 -process to be based on cooperation between the same. The aim is to activate all interest groups to participate in implementing an action plan for sustainable development in this area.

The proposal was sent to all 56 municipalities in the region, and close to 20 of them decided to participate in the work. The actual work started in January 1997 with the establishment of an Agenda office in Turku.

The process concentrates on four main themes:

  • environmental education
  • environmental awareness raising at all levels of society
  • water protection (both inland and the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea)
  • development of traffic and communication

In addition to these common regional topics, each community may set its own goals as based on its own conditions and needs.
