Shrove Tuesday

It is the celebration dedicated to mark the end of calendar winter. A colouful fair will be organised. In small yeards, Lašininis, Kanapinis (traditional figures of the carnival), Jews, Gypsies and other caricature masks will be waiting for people to enjoy the festive event. Pancakes will be made. Most of the time people dance around the bonfires, play traditional Lithuanian games, sing various songs.  The most beautiful masks will be selected and the awards will be handed over.

In Tartu, Christmas comes early each year! On the first Advent Sunday, the Christmas City is opened on the Town Hall Square to brighten up the dark season and bring Christmas joy to everyone. The festive season offers concerts, museum workshops, dance festival in the wintry city centre and the traditional Christmas Market with the most delicious handmade gingerbread cookies, hot drinks to keep you warm as well as other homemade treats and handicrafts.

The festival, which takes place in an old factory that has been turned into a culture centre, offers a wide range of events from night cinema sessions, concerts and sports competitions to pop-up cafes, workshops, tours and great bargains at the flea market.

Tartu is flying exceptionally high at the beginning of June, during the largest outdoor aviation event – the Estonian Aviation Days which brings together the greatest daredevils. The two-day event is filled with performances of aerobatic celebrities, flights of Air Force and PPA aircrafts and helicopters, wingsuit fliers, motorised hang gliders and parachutists. There are also primary presentations of aviation technique, numerous attractions and playrooms.

The Christmas event marathon starts in the town square with lighting of the Christmas tree. Every year the main city Christmas tree offers surprises with unusual and non‑traditional decorative ideas. The lighting of the Christmas tree is only the beginning of the Christmas period because the City at Christmas is full of handmade souvenirs and delicacies - and, of course, Santa Claus welcomes visitors throughout December.
