UBC Commission on Gender Equality

It is of great importance to strengthen and accelerate the work on gender equality in the UBC and its member cities and regions. The UBC Commission on Gender Equality is a way to promote and support a gender perspective and work on gender equality. For a democratic development of the Union it is necessary that women participate and influence the work at all levels and the UBC Commission on Gender Equality is established to support and ensure this development.

The base of the Commission are contact persons in the member cities and an address list with their names is available.

The Chair of the Commission:
Ms Aurora Moberg
Head of Strategic Development
City Hall

Goals and Aims
The Commission focuses on three main areas promoting gender equality and these are:

  • Combating prostitution and human trafficking
  • Issues of the labour market
  • Social planning, urban planning and planning work

The Commission will advance towards its goals by:

  • Awareness-raising within the field of gender equality
  • Lobbying for women's representation at all levels of the UBC
  • Promoting that a gender perspective is integrated into all the activities of the UBC
  • Channeling information and contacts of the member cities
  • Arranging conferences, seminars and meetings

The Commission is open for new members. Politicians, officials, managers and other interested from the member cities are welcome to join the Commission. Both women and men are invited to join in this work!

Strategies and Activities
When the Commission started in 1993 as a Network, the initial strategy was to focus on activities that could bring women in the UBC together and facilitate the sharing of experiences. This has shown to be fruitful and will continue to be an important part of the work. Some of the activities that has been initiated by the Commission are conferences and seminars.

The Commission has also been represented at many women's conferences, both in the Baltic Sea Region and other parts of Europe

In line with international developments, the strategy in the UBC today also encompasses the promotion of gender mainstreaming. Adopted by the world community at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, gender mainstreaming means integrating a gender perspective into all areas and at all levels of decision-making and management of the  societies. It means to systematically work for an equal distribution of power, resources and opportunities between women and men.

The European Union and national governments within the EU have adopted the gender mainstreaming strategy, also the UBC.

You will find the decisions about gender equality in the guiding documents of the UBC, The Strategy and The General Guidelines within the UBC Action Plan.

After the Pärnu conference in September 2007 the Commission will present a new address and contact list for the Commission members.
