1st Social Progress Cities Summit

Date:
17.09.2019

Mayors and City representatives from European cities are warmly invited to the 1st Social Progress Cities Summit, 17 September 2019, Umeå, Sweden

The battle for a fairer, healthier more equitable, socially progressive and balanced society that acknowledges its diversity will be won or lost in cities. Progressive, innovative cities look at themselves from within a 360º perspective. This lens helps seeing the needs and priorities of differing groups – the young, the old, women, men, differing ethnicities and origins, abilities and lifestyles. Only when these are aligned do cities work well. To be creative and innovative today means operating within planetary boundaries, being focused on peoples’ deeper needs and worries. It involves creating emotionally satisfying, well connected places that are also pioneering in fostering a circular economy. The transition towards this better city cannot be tackled piece by piece or in a business as usual approach. This requires courage and determination from public, private and civic forces. This is where the 1ST Social Progress Cities Summit and the discussions we invite you to take part in, comes into their own.

This 1st Social Progress Cities Summit is a new way to engage the local level in the formation of the European Social Pillar post 2020. Under the umbrella of the European Social Progress Index, this international event will bring together European cities committed to Social Progress in their cities. The programme will focus on the contribution of cities committed to social progress with good examples on social inclusion and progress from cities, complementing the more traditional GDP-measure as a way of well-being. It will also demonstrate the EU Social Progress Index Pilot project, which aims to test how the Social Progress Index could be used to inform and improve policy making in relation to policies supported by the EU cohesion policy. A declaration including policy suggestions to the EU Social Pillar post 2020 will be adopted at the end of the Summit. The program will start on the evening of the 16th of September and close in the evening of the 17th. Key note speakers are Michael Green, “Measuring social progress (Social Progress Index Imperative ), Philippe Martin (European Commission) Paula Annoni, (European Commission, DG Regio) and Susanna Franco (Orchestra institute, EU SPI Pilot project) The meeting will be led by Mr Charles Landry, who will also key note on the “Human centred city”.
